If you are not absolutely passionate about health and fitness then you are destined to fail as a personal trainer.
That may seem like a heavy way to start a post, but I don't feel like there is any reason to sugar coat this fact.
Ask any great personal trainer how they got into the industry, I can guarantee it wasn't because it was an easy and inexpensive way to start their own business, or an opportunity to meet men or women or because it's something to do while they figure out what they want to be when they grow up. I’ve never met a long term, successful personal trainer that began their career with this kind of agenda.
All of the great trainers I’ve met over the years had one thing in common; no matter who they were, they always had an incredible story behind becoming a personal trainer.
A friend of mine in Sydney for example, began his career because he had a genuine passion for fitness and found himself training friends and their friends and their friends for free. He literally had clients throwing themselves at him and even though he was quite successful outside of the industry, decided to use his skills as a builder to fit out some commercial space into a very professional and unique personal training studio.
The only problem with many great trainers is that they’re not great business people.
Great business people are generally smart enough to realise how tough the fitness industry is to make a successful career out of and pursue ventures elsewhere. However, you don’t have to be a brilliant business mind to be successful in our industry as long as you stay proactive and innovative with your clients and behind the scenes.
The reasons behind you becoming a personal trainer will generally determine how successful you are in the long term.
If you’re not sincere about helping people achieve their goals, your colleagues will recognise it and it’s only a matter of time before your clients will as well.
I'd love to read your story how you became involved in the fitness industry, so please feel free to comment below.
