Personal Trainers: How to Ask For Referrals

One of the easiest, most cost effective and simplest ways to build your personal training fitness business is through client referrals.

Very few fitness professionals ever actually ask for referrals from their clients. Fewer still ask in the right way at the right time. And even fewer ask for referrals a part of their ongoing business marketing strategy.

So why are referrals so important for building your fitness business?

Referrals carry immediate credibility.

No matter whom you are or how long you have been in the fitness industry, a client referral makes you an instant expert in your field. If your mechanic recommends a tyre retailer, you're much more likely to act on that referral than if you hear an advertisement on the radio or get a flyer under your windshield wiper.

There are some simple steps to follow in order to successfully achieve a client referral and if performed correctly, can guarantee growth of up to 75% to your fitness business in a relatively short time:

• Make sure your clients are happy: You are more likely to receive a referral from a satisfied client than one that is not achieving results.

• Don’t be afraid of rejection: The motto is to ask everyone. There is nothing wrong with asking your client if they know someone that may benefit from your services. Of course not everyone needs what you’re selling, but if you are good then there will always be a market

• Reward the clients that provide referrals: Offer free sessions with their next purchase or use their success in a marketing campaign.

If you look after you clients they will look after you.

In conversation, mention the importance of referrals to your business and the incentives you offer to clients that provide them.

You will find that as long as there’s something in it for them that they will be more than happy to be of assistance.
