I mention in a few of the articles on this blog, different techniques of rewarding your clients for achieving their physical goals and accomplishing fitness based challenges, however this post is about you, the personal trainer and sharing in their success.
We work in a relatively thankless profession; all of the odd hours and expense, not to mention the physical and mental pressures that we subject ourselves to daily. When do we get a high five? When is our cheat day?
Would it be safe to assume that when one of your clients reaches a long term goal that you've been there the whole way, guiding, monitoring, directing and educating them? So why not celebrate their success with them and earn yourself a pat on the back?
Celebrating a clients success with them is one priority I made early in my career after realizing that my clients had no idea how to initiate any kind of activity outside of the gym that didn’t involve orange cones.
When a client achieves something extraordinary, something that we had worked on relentlessly, I would take them to what I would call a 'thank you lunch' and bring along their file to review their progress.
On the surface, this might sound like you're rewarding them, but you're really achieving two very important things:
1. You're strengthening your relationship and therefore your business
2. You're relaxing out of the gym with a friend and enjoying a nice meal
In this situation, there’s no pressure and no expectations, you can be yourselves and often what you will notice in this environment is that your clients will take this opportunity to thank you for all of your hard work.
That "thank you" reinforces everything. It reminds them that they probably couldn’t be where they are today without you and it is like a giant breath of fresh air that reinvigorates your drive to be the best that you can be.
