Here's Some Of The Whys:
- If you enjoy the article, you can very conveniently 'Like' it and share with your facebook friends, essentially thanking the author by giving their article more exposure (which is AWESOME!).
- Liking the article shows me that I'm on the right track and that people are responding. It shows me what you guys like to read.
- It shows visitors to the blog that the article is worth reading i.e helpful, entertaining etc.. Someone new to the blog can see that so many people enjoyed the article that it must be worth reading; aka Social Proof.
- It may contribute to search engine ranking (this is pure speculation as no-one really knows how search engine algorithms are calculated however, there are signs that suggest that a well 'liked' article can rank higher than a similar article not as heavily shared).
This is a good thing AND a bad thing. On the bright side, your potential clients and customers are online and searching for quality information and services, the downside is that it's VERY competitive; so any edge that you can add to your blog will help and adding a facebook Like button is one of those edges.
Convinced you need a Like button yet? This is the exact method and code I used to put it on my blogger blog:
Here's The How:
NB. You should always 'back up' your HTML template by simply clicking the 'back up' button before toying around with your codes. That way if something does accidentally go wrong, you can easily just go back.Step 1.
Log into your blogger account, then go to 'Layout' or 'Design' (depending on the type of account you have) and click the 'Edit Html' tab.
You will see a tick box on the right that says 'Expand Widget Template'; tick that.
Step 2.
You will need to find the following code:
<div class='post-header-line-1'/>If you have trouble locating it (which you probably will), you can hit '[Ctrl] F' on your keyboard which will open a search box that you can copy/paste the code into and it will highlight it for you within the template.
Step 3.
Immediately AFTER that code, copy/paste the following facebook button code into your template:
<iframe allowTransparency='true' expr:src='"http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=" + data:post.url + "&layout=standard&show_faces=false&width=100&action=like&font=arial&colorscheme=light"' frameborder='0' scrolling='no' style='border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:40px;'/>If you have a custom template and you can't find the first code, look for this one instead:
<data:post.body/>And paste your button code immediately BEFORE it.
Hit 'Preview' at the bottom and if you're happy with what you see, then hit 'Save'.
If you have any questions or problems adding the facebook like button code to your blogger blog, please let me know in the comments section below.
