10 Tips To Producing Promotional Videos That People WILL Watch

It's a fact; video plays and has played a HUGE part of business marketing strategies via television for decades and with the DOMINATION of online video hosting sites like YouTube, video should now play a massive role in every personal trainer and fitness professionals as well.

Television revolutionised the advertising medium by giving businesses the opportunity to demonstrate and introduce themselves in a far more personable way than print and still images alone can ever achieve.

The problem with television advertising is that it costs a FORTUNE, even more if you want it aired when your target market is actually watching TV.

Hello YouTube

YouTube is a FREE service that was created by 3 former PayPal employees in February 2005; 21 months later YouTube was purchased by Google for 1.65 billion dollars (not bad at all).

YouTube has given almost every person in the world the opportunity to become famous in their own right and as the world's 2nd largest search engine (behind Google) if you're not on there (and doing it properly), you're missing out on a ton of FREE business opportunities.

Another great thing about YouTube is that people DON'T EXPECT top quality productions, but they do expect to be informed, educated and/or amused so you might as well do the best job you can.

10 Tips To Help You Produce Video That People WILL Watch

1. Plan Your Video In Advance:

What content do you want to capture? What is the message that you want to convey? What's your story? By knowing in advance what you want, the smoother your shoot should run and you'll also have to spend less time editing.

2. Keep Your Videos Short:

No more than 2 minutes is a safe video length, especially for a simple promo clip. You're not teaching anyone anything, you're simply highlighting your business strengths and your unique selling point.

3. Change The Camera Angles:

Get content from different angles. If you're just shooting a quick speaking clip, shoot it twice from different angles and then mix and match through your editing.

4. Keep Your Video Flowing Along

No one wants to watch you do 20 push ups, no one wants to listen to one of your clients talk for a minute about how wonderful you are. Mix it up! 2 push ups, a scene from a boot camp, you screaming at a weakened client, them saying "I nearly died, but Ben got me through" slap up some before and after pics and call it a day!

5. Choose Music That Appeals To Your Audience

Just because I like Rage Against The Machine, you won't find that humming along in the background of any of my videos. Choose tracks that are more instrumental, with tempo changes that you can edit along with.

6. If You Must Read What You're Saying, Consider Doing A Voice Over

No one likes to feel like some one's talking to their ear. If you have to read what you want to say, then get a ton of cool footage, edit it down to the length of your speech and record a voice over.

7. Choose Your Location/Backdrop Carefully

What's in the background can take the focus off the message that you're projecting. An untidy space or noise from traffic for example can detract from your message and make your amateur video look completely unprofessional.

If you're going to set up a backdrop; the best color to have is royal blue as it's the most flattering to skin tones.

8. Look And Dress Appropriate

This will depend on your target audience and the message you're conveying as to what you wear, but here are some things to consider:
  • The best colored clothes to wear are solid colors and pastels
  • Avoid too much jewelry
  • No white or dark clothing
  • No beeping watches
  • Pager and cell phone turned off
  • Take a comb, makeup, and mirror
  • Eyeglasses, if must wear get glare free type or frames with no lenses
  • Don’t forget to get a good night sleep before the shoot
9. Include Other People In Your Video

I mentioned testimonials before, but bang through them. No more than 20 seconds each person. If we wanted to hear more about how great you are from one person we would interview your mom.

10. Provide A Call To Action

This comes back to why you made the video in the first place. It's no good someone sitting through your masterpiece, getting fired up and then the clip just ends...Tell them to do something!
  • Go to this website
  • Call this number
  • Like this facebook page
It doesn't matter what, just make the decision for them.

I love filming, editing and producing video content for other people; it's one of my favorite things to do with social media. Not everyone has the creative flair, but if you follow these 10 principles on your next video, it will be a lot more pleasing to watch and won't end up on the My Business Is Fitness facebook page.
