Did you know that just by having a well designed and interactive Twitter profile you could potentially double your business and open the door to international recognition within your niche?
Crazy huh; but ask anyone that has spent some time on Twitter and they'll all tell you the same thing...IT ROCKS AND IT WORKS!
Here are some Twitter statistics that are the most current that I could find. Mind you they'll be obsolete in no time at all, so enjoy them while they're hot!
- 67% Of Twitter users are more likely to buy brands that they follow
- Businesses that use Twitter average 2x more leads per month than businesses that don't
- Twitter plays an active role in purchasing decisions
- Twitter users have higher incomes than the average population
- There are 75 million active Twitter users worldwide
In the 12 or so months that I've been using it, not only has my blog traffic exploded, but the connections I've made with amazing people all over the world within my niche and interests have blown my mind.
If you're currently using Twitter, maybe you found this blog or even this post from one of my updates; if you're not currently registered on Twitter; go here Twitter.com now...and then come straight back, because I have some cool tips for you.
Just having a Twitter account is not enough. Many people don't realise that there are actually some techniques to how you set up your account that can greatly influence the numbers, types and quality of followers that you will attract.
Let me break it down for you:
Username:
There are arguments to support both using your own name or your business name for your profile. If you're a celebrity, then sure, go ahead and use your real name, but for business branding, the consensus seems to support using your business name (or version thereof), is most effective and then your real name as the user.
Using your business name, which may also contain keywords, makes it clearer to your potential audience what it is you're all about. My username is mybizisfitness because there is a 15 letter character limit, so I couldn't put the whole mybusinessisfitness name, though the word 'fitness' is in there so it gives followers some indication of what they can expect from my tweets.
It's entirely your decision which you opt for, however for branding purposes I recommend running with your business name.
Also, make sure to put your real name in the 'name' section. It's frustrating when people simply write their business name twice or leave it blank. Put your name in there, even if just your first so that when users want to acknowledge you they can be more personal. Remember that social media is all about relationships.
Location:
You could be clever and write 'office' or 'earth', but that does not give potential clients any idea where you're located.
Using your actual location also helps search engines use your profile to match search enquiries. For example; if your Twitter name is kimsfitness and your location is entered correctly, then when someone searches fitness in that location, there is a good chance you will pop up.
It's also important to put an accurate location as many users search by location for specific services. There are services like Twellow.com that enable users to search for Twitter users by keywords including location.
Profile Information:
Your Twitter profile again has a character limit, but it's important to know that you should be using keywords in there too. My Twitter profile is:
"Social Media Marketing | Blogger | Fitness Business Coach | Dumbbell Destroying Gym Junkie | Personal Trainer | Dominating | Contact Ben @mybizisfitness"
It's pretty much a list of keywords which again not only helps users identify what you're into and ultimately tweet about, it's search engine food, so that they know who you are.
Pick your keywords, arrange them so they make some kind of sense and slap them up.

Again, there can be arguments both sides for using your own image or your logo. I know some very successful accounts that use a logo as their image, but I personally prefer to speak to a face, not a logo. Not only do people want to know who they're talking to by name, they want to know what you look like.
My recommendation is to use a picture of yourself smiling. It doesn't have to be a professional head shot or anything fancy, but help people connect with you by showing them your face.
Website Link:
If you're already using Twitter you can probably agree that if someone sparks your interest, there's a good chance that you'll click on the website link at the bottom of their profile to check them out.
This is EXACTLY what you want to happen guys so make sure that you send them somewhere awesome!
I use to simply have a link to my blog and cross my fingers that the traffic would find what they're looking for. Recently however, I've changed my tactic and it's working like a charm!
I now direct people who click on my Twitter link to my 'About' page. You see, my About page is set up to convert leads into subscribers by giving them information about the blog and then encouraging them to opt in for more.
Check out my About Page here and you'll see what I mean : About My Business Is Fitness.
As you can see, there is a little bit more to having a Twitter account than putting up a picture and quoting Anthony Robbins every 20 minutes.
If you have a Twitter account already, spend sometime refreshing it to make it more user friendly for your potential followers and search engines and if you're just getting started, you might as well do it right from the get go.
